Should a writer respond to negative reviews? Usually not, I think. No book is perfect, injured pride is best kept concealed, and no one should expect usefully engaged discussion to resemble a hymn of praise. However, an argument may sometimes need to be defended against ‘reviews’ that, for reasons of malice, incompetence or professional myopia, set out to obscure the project of a book…
That’s my justification for the following letter, published in the TLS under the heading ‘iron curtains’ on April 23 2008.
