I have never used a rifle - whether for food or sport - so I cannot comment on the ideal firearm for the hungry traveller.
But I can say this: nobody today can write such letters as these, and nor would any newspaper publish them.
I do not know whether to blame the demise of classical education, the rise of television, or something in the water. Whatever the reason, we are the poorer.

Wonderful stuff. Well done on finding it, and thanks so much for re-publishing it. The Hermit of the Arctic, the naive device of the juvenile truant, and Mr Money-Coutts himself (surely a nom-de-guerre?). Brilliant.
