The Quaysides of Brick Lane: Walking with Emanuel Litvinoff

Comments & Replies

Published in Iain Sinclair (ed.), London: City of Disappearances, London: Hamish Hamilton, 2006, pp. 233-253.

Emanuel Litvinoff grew up in the Jewish East End of the 1920s, and this article follows him back there to consider the now vanished ghetto he remembered in his book of stories Journey Through a Small Planet (1972).   An earlier version was published under the title ‘Ghetto Blaster’ in Guardian Weekend, 27 March 1993, pp. 16-23.  An expanded and finalised version will appear as the introduction to a new edition of Journey Through a Small Planet, to be published by Penguin Classics on 7 August 2008.
